Preface

This is a free ebook written by Dr. Mohammed Alhaider to enlighten high school students and those of their preparatory year in engineering.

The book is divided into a short introduction followed by eleven chapters and appendices. The first chapter goes through history of engineering according to what is documented in the books of history and has a look at the future though hard to predict. The second chapter talks about teaching and learning engineering which will be beneficial for educators and students. Chapter three is written with the students in mind but will so be beneficial for educators. Chapter four to eight are intended for students. Chapter nine explains the importance of codes and standards and samples of few stdards which should be taught to students prior to graduation. Chapter ten introduces ten case studies and presents the Code of Ethics for Engineers as stated by the National Society of Professional Engineers of America. Chapter eleven presents few science and engineering analogies as seen by the author in addition to analogies cited by their references. Appendices A to E present valuable information for lecturers and students. When using this book, it is not necessary to follow the same sequence presented in the book but can choose relevant chapters to the discipline.

The author does not claim that his work is perfect and welcomes any constructive comments and corrections and hopes that what is presented is of benefit to the profession.

About the Author

Dr. Mohammed Alhaider obtained his BSc in Electrical Engineering from King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 1968 and his MSc and PhD in electrical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University at Pittsburgh, Pa, USA in 1972 and 1977 respectively. He joined KSU in 1977 and retired in 2004. During the course of his career he held the positions of Deputy Dean then Dean, College of Engineering at KSU. He published over 50 papers and participated in translating and authoring five books in electronics and communications. His professional activities started in 1977 until now where he is working as a consultant to Alfaisal University. During the course of his professional experience he spent thirty years with Arriyadh Development Authority. The author is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET) in the United Kingdom, Chartered Engineer (CEng), European Engineer (EurIng), International Professional Registration Advisor for the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). He is a Senior Life Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (SLMIEEE).
